Chapter 8 – Christian IV

There has been more than one queen of Denmark, but after Margaret I (r. 1387–1412) and until Margrethe II (r. 1972–present), Denmark’s ruler was a man. Beginning with Christian II, the son of King Hans, in 1513, Danish kings have alternated in taking the names Christian and Frederick.

Many historians and Danes believe that the greatest Danish king was Christian IV, who ruled Denmark from 1588 to 1648. Though he was only eleven when he took the throne, his reign lasted sixty years, dying just shy of his seventy-first birthday.
